What are the necessary procedures?
Poema has vast experience in planning religious weddings of the Christian, Orthodox, Catholic and Coptic faith in Greece. To have a religious wedding here, you do not need to permanently reside in Greece. However, there is a quite extensive list of documents and procedures that you will need to take care of before your marriage.
Depending on your country of origin and the type of religious ceremony you would like to have, the necessary documentation and procedures will vary. For this reason and to avoid any omissions, we advise you to book a private consultation with our team. Do I need to register my religious marriage in Greece?
For the religious marriage to become legal, it needs to be registered at the local Registrar’s Office (Lixiarhio). The registration needs to take place within 40 days following the ceremony, by the couple or by a proxy. If you so wish, Poema can undertake your wedding registration ad hoc or as part of our wedding planner services.
However, the only religious marriages that can register at the Registrar’s Office are Greek Orthodox and Catholic marriages. Christian and Coptic weddings, just like cultural weddings, are not registered. This means that the Greek state recognizes the traditions of the wedding, but not its legal status. In such cases, some couples choose to have their religious ceremony as well as a civil wedding. This practice ensures that their marriage will gain legal status, as well as reflect the traditions of their faith.
